Mara Raises $7M to Build a Counter-Drone System That Costs What the Drones Cost

Mara, a US defense technology startup, has raised 7 million dollars in pre‑seed funding to accelerate development of Spike, its low‑cost autonomous system for intercepting small first‑person‑view drones. The round was led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from a16z Speedrun, Night Capital, Palmdrive, Protagonist, Freedom Fund, Indicator Fund, and Zee Prime Capital, alongside a number of angel investors.
The company was founded in October 2024 by Daniel Kofman and Sriram Raghu, childhood friends who met in high school in 2013. Based in San Francisco with a team of roughly seven people, Mara went through a16z's Speedrun accelerator program in early 2025 before building toward this pre‑seed close.
The problem Mara is built to solve has become one of the defining features of modern warfare. First‑person‑view drones, which can cost as little as a few hundred dollars to build, have emerged as the single deadliest threat on the battlefield, capable of destroying armored vehicles and disabling infrastructure worth many millions of dollars. Ukrainian commanders have attributed 70 to 80 percent of battlefield casualties to drones, and despite billions of dollars already invested in counter‑drone technology industry‑wide, FPV drones remain the leading cause of combat casualties globally.
Much of the existing counter‑drone industry was built to address a different kind of threat: large drones flying high overhead on predictable, trackable trajectories. Small FPV drones behave nothing like that. They can launch from virtually anywhere, attack in coordinated swarms from multiple directions simultaneously, and increasingly rely on fiber‑optic control links or onboard guidance systems that let them evade the electronic jamming techniques that have historically been the primary defense against remotely piloted drones. Russia began fielding fiber‑optic controlled drones in spring 2024, and by February 2026, Ukraine had approved more than 80 of its own domestic fiber‑optic drone designs. In June 2025, Ukraine's Operation Spiderweb used 117 FPV drones launched from trucks positioned deep inside Russian territory to strike five airbases thousands of kilometers from the front line, a demonstration of how far the reach and coordination of FPV drone attacks has already advanced.
Mara's answer, a system called Spike, pairs a small, man‑portable container holding dozens of miniature, high‑speed interceptors with a separate detection and targeting system that cues and deploys them automatically. Rather than relying on a single gun, laser, or semi‑piloted interceptor tracking one drone at a time within one sensor and effector cone, an approach that struggles against pincer, swarm, and ambush tactics, Spike is designed as a distributed mesh capable of engaging multiple incoming threats from different angles at once.
The most distinctive part of Mara's pitch is cost. Rather than building an exquisite, expensive system to counter a cheap threat, Mara has deliberately priced its interceptors to compete at roughly the same cost level as the FPV drones they are built to stop, an approach the company argues is essential given how cheaply adversaries can produce swarms of attack drones in the first place. Khosla Ventures partner Nicole Fraenkel pointed to that specific combination of speed and cost as what drew the firm to invest. "Mara has moved rapidly from proof‑of‑concept to user testing for an autonomous system," Fraenkel said. "What caught my eye is that they're building counter‑drone autonomy with a system cost that's orders of magnitude lower than anything else we've seen."
Mara's technology has already moved through several stages of real‑world validation. The company's Seeker interceptor has completed intercepts cued through US Army software during testing in Texas, while its Spotter detection system ran hands‑free aboard an armored vehicle in Europe, feeding data directly into Army command software. In one end‑to‑end engagement with a US special operations unit, Spotter detected and cued Seeker without any operator input at all. In July, Ukrainian forces operated Spotter roughly 40 kilometers from the front line, tracking multiple FPV drones simultaneously. Mara holds cooperative testing agreements with three US defense organizations, was selected for NATO's DIANA innovation accelerator, and is engaging with international military partners in the UK, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine. Beyond military use, the company is also running a civilian pilot project at a South Korean port.
With the new funding, Mara plans to deploy ground‑mounted Spike units with key defense customers by the end of 2026, followed by vehicle‑mounted and portable rucksack‑carried variants in 2027, alongside a broader production scale‑up. This marks Khosla Ventures' second defense technology investment since April 2026, following the firm's leadership of a 350 million dollar fundraising round for unmanned high‑speed aircraft company Hermeus.
Mara enters a counter‑drone market that has drawn substantial venture investment in recent months, though most competitors have taken a considerably more capital‑intensive approach. Khosla itself co‑led a 36 million dollar seed round for counter‑swarm company Skapion in July, Epirus raised 250 million dollars in 2025 for microwave‑based defense systems, and Allen Control Systems raised 200 million dollars at a 2.2 billion dollar valuation in June for its Bullfrog gun turret system. Established players DroneShield and Fortem offer more integrated but considerably more expensive solutions, while Norway's Stendr, which raised 5.4 million dollars at the start of 2026, and Israel's D‑Fend Solutions, which uses RF cyber‑takeover methods rather than kinetic interceptors, represent closer comparators in cost positioning even as their underlying technical approaches differ. Major defense contractors including RTX Corporation, Thales Group, and BAE Systems have all publicly acknowledged the need for solutions specifically targeting the FPV threat, but Forbes has noted that innovation in this specific niche remains at a relatively early stage industry‑wide, leaving room for a startup willing to compete primarily on cost rather than sophistication to establish an early foothold before larger, better‑funded competitors close the gap.
