Gemini Personal Intelligence Starts Rolling Out on Android Auto, Pulling From Gmail, Maps and Photos While You Drive

Google has begun rolling out Personal Intelligence with Gemini to Android Auto, giving its AI assistant access to information from a user's own Google apps while they drive. The company announced the rollout on October 20, 2026. Cars with Google built‑in, meaning software and services integrated directly into the vehicle, will receive the feature in the coming months.
Gemini is now available globally on both Android Auto and cars with Google built‑in. Google first launched Gemini in Android Auto last November, and Personal Intelligence arrived in the Gemini app earlier this year, in January.
With a user's permission, Personal Intelligence connects information from Workspace apps, including Gmail and Google Calendar, along with Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. Google says it has two core strengths. It can retrieve a specific detail from an email, a photo or a saved place to answer a question, and it can reason across several sources at once.
Google gave several examples of requests drivers can make by voice:
- On the way to the airport, a driver can ask for their flight gate and whether the flight is on time, and Gemini answers both without a separate search of the confirmation email and delay information.
- A driver looking for dinner in an unfamiliar town can ask for an indoor restaurant along the route that matches their usual preferences. For a vegetarian, Google says the shortlist will reflect that.
- A driver can say "Take me to my doctor's appointment" without remembering the street address.
- A driver can ask Gemini to find the car wash from a photo taken last week and navigate there.
- A driver can ask to be taken to the coffee shop discussed in a conversation the day before.
Google says it built Personal Intelligence with privacy at the center. Apps are not connected until the user turns the feature on, and users choose which apps Gemini can access. They can switch it off at any time in Gemini settings.
In cars with Google built‑in, personal responses are shared only when the user is in the car with their phone connected. Without Personal Intelligence, everything in the car continues to work. Navigation, music, calls and questions to Gemini are all available, but the answers are not tailored to the user.
Users who already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app will find that their preferences carry over to the car. Others can set their preferences in Gemini settings.
Personal Intelligence is rolling out to eligible personal Google accounts for users aged 18 and older. It is not available for Workspace business, enterprise or education accounts. The rollout excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
On Android Auto, which runs on a user's phone and projects navigation, media and messaging to the vehicle's infotainment system, the feature begins rolling out immediately. For cars with Google built‑in, the company has not given a date beyond the next few months.
Android Auto is an app on the phone that connects wirelessly or by cable to the car's display. Google built‑in is software that runs natively on the vehicle's infotainment system, Gemini is already in millions of cars, trucks and SUVs.
The two approaches draw on the same account. In a Google built‑in vehicle, the personal layer depends on the driver's phone being present, which ties tailored answers to the person in the car rather than to the vehicle itself.
Google has been extending Personal Intelligence to more places since its January arrival, and the Android Auto launch adds the car to that list. The feature opens access to Gmail, Photos, Maps, Search and Workspace apps for answers that depend on a user's own information.
Google's announcement was written by Karan Daryanani, senior product manager for Gemini. The company said drivers can speak naturally to get more done or brainstorm ideas while driving, and that the aim is to let them keep their eyes on the road.
