Nearby Computing Lands €680K To Stop Enterprises Managing Edge Infrastructure Piece By Piece

Nearby Computing, a Barcelona based deeptech company, has secured a 680,000 euro investment from the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation, forming part of a wider 1.4 million euro financing operation aimed at scaling the platform it uses to manage infrastructure spread across sites, clouds and vendors from a single control point.

The company was founded in 2018 and has spent much of its history building NearbyOne, a control plane designed to orchestrate and automate distributed cloud‑to‑edge environments spanning networks, infrastructure, applications and, increasingly, AI workloads. That focus has attracted backing before, including a 7 million dollar Series A round supported by Telefónica's corporate venture arm Wayra, and Nearby Computing has previously been named a Cool Vendor in Edge Computing by Gartner.

The problem the company is built around has become more pronounced as enterprise infrastructure has grown more distributed rather than less. Josep Marti, chief executive of Nearby Computing, has described a pattern he sees repeated across nearly every enterprise the company works with, infrastructure that used to sit in one central location now runs across multiple sites, cloud providers and hardware vendors at once, and trying to manage that sprawl one piece at a time simply does not scale as complexity grows. Marti has characterised that fragmentation as one of the biggest hidden costs sitting inside enterprise IT today, largely because it is a cost that accumulates gradually through operational friction rather than showing up as a single visible line item a company can point to and address directly.

NearbyOne is built to address that fragmentation by giving an enterprise a single platform through which to provision, manage and orchestrate infrastructure regardless of where individual pieces of it physically sit or which vendor originally supplied them. The platform is explicitly vendor‑agnostic, designed to orchestrate workloads across any hardware vendor, cloud provider, network infrastructure or AI stack a customer already has in place, an approach intended to let companies keep using their existing technology investments while retaining the ability to switch vendors in the future without the complex, high‑risk migrations that vendor lock‑in typically forces on them.

Resilience is built into the platform's core design rather than treated as an add‑on feature. When connectivity to a central cloud is disrupted, whether by an outage or another form of network failure, critical workloads are designed to keep running locally at the edge rather than failing over entirely, reducing the operational impact of exactly the kind of disruption that would otherwise bring business‑critical processes to a halt. That resilience matters most in the specific sectors where Nearby Computing has found its clearest early traction, industries where operational continuity and reliability carry outsized consequences when they fail.

Telecom service providers represent one of the company's core use cases, using NearbyOne to orchestrate infrastructure spanning 5G Core and radio access network vendors as a single unified fleet rather than managing each vendor's equipment and software separately, a meaningful simplification in an industry where multi‑vendor 5G deployments have historically required significant manual coordination between overlapping and often incompatible management systems. In retail, the platform is used to deploy and manage AI‑driven applications consistently across hundreds of individual store locations, letting a retailer roll out and update in‑store AI capabilities from a central point rather than configuring each location's infrastructure independently.

The new funding will go toward Nearby Computing's continued growth and further development of the NearbyOne platform, according to the company, though it has not detailed specific new features or markets the investment will target beyond that general growth mandate. The involvement of the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation, a public‑private body focused on supporting technology driven transformation within the Spanish economy, points to a degree of institutional confidence in edge orchestration as a category worth backing at a national level, alongside the more typical venture capital interest the company has attracted previously through investors like Wayra.

Nearby Computing's raise reflects a broader shift already well underway across enterprise infrastructure, as AI workloads, 5G network deployments and distributed retail and industrial applications continue pushing meaningful computing power out of centralised data centres and toward the edge, closer to where data is actually generated and decisions need to be made in real time. That shift has created growing demand for orchestration software capable of managing complexity across an increasingly fragmented set of vendors and locations without asking enterprises to standardise on a single vendor's proprietary stack to get that manageability. Whether Nearby Computing's vendor‑agnostic approach continues to win out over more vertically integrated alternatives offered directly by major cloud and networking vendors, who have their own incentives to keep customers inside a single ecosystem, will likely determine how much of that broader shift toward distributed infrastructure Nearby Computing is able to capture as the category continues to mature.
