Onomondo, a Copenhagen based IoT infrastructure and connectivity company, has secured a combined investment of more than 100 million euros led by British private equity firm Aspirity Partners, which has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a majority stake in the business.

Denmark's sovereign investment fund EIFO, which has backed Onomondo since 2021, is increasing its own investment as part of the same transaction. The deal marks Aspirity Partners' first investment in the Nordic region, and comes from a firm that closed its debut fund at more than 875 million euros last year with a stated focus on European technology services and fintech. The transaction still requires regulatory approval and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027.

Onomondo was founded in Copenhagen in 2012 by chief executive Michael Karlsen and chief technology officer Henrik Aagaard, who set out to redesign how devices connect to cellular networks rather than relying on the conventional operator network stack that has underpinned IoT connectivity for decades. Instead of routing connectivity through traditional mobile carriers the way most IoT SIM providers do, Onomondo built its own end to end technology stack spanning the device itself, the radio access network, and the cloud, anchored by what the company calls patented Cloud Connectors.

That architecture gives Onomondo direct access to nearly 700 mobile networks across more than 100 countries, letting connected devices move between private and public networks without the roaming complexity and cost that typically comes with traditional multi carrier IoT deployments. The company's SoftSIM technology, which it describes as the world's first fully software based IoT SIM, removes the need for a physical SIM card altogether, an approach designed to simplify device manufacturing and reduce the logistical overhead of provisioning connectivity at scale.

Aagaard has framed the company's mission in terms of a broader shift already under way in how physical infrastructure and AI intersect. He has said that for decades, technological progress was limited by the ability to process huge amounts of data, and that AI has changed that constraint, shifting the bottleneck toward infrastructure itself, specifically the challenge of reliably connecting and coordinating a growing base of physical devices. He described that as an infrastructure problem the company has spent eight years solving, arguing that Onomondo took a fundamentally different path by building the foundational infrastructure layer that was missing, a single, unified platform connecting the device, the network and the cloud across global operations.

Onomondo's more than 500 corporate clients span logistics, automotive and energy, with named customers including Maersk, Carlsberg and Husqvarna. Its work with Maersk extends well beyond standard device connectivity: the company operates what is reportedly the world's largest private LTE network at sea, covering more than 450 Maersk vessels, a deployment that illustrates the kind of large scale, mission critical infrastructure project Onomondo is positioning itself to take on as its ambitions grow.

The company's growth has been steady rather than explosive by venture capital standards, having previously raised 21 million dollars in a round led by growth equity firm Verdane in 2024, with participation from Maersk Growth, People Ventures and The Danish Growth Fund. At the time, Onomondo said it was targeting a tripling of annual recurring revenue over each of the following two years, a target that, if achieved, would help explain the far larger scale of the current investment round.

With the new capital, Onomondo plans to expand internationally, add network infrastructure, and continue developing new products on top of its existing platform. Aspirity Partners' decision to take a majority stake, rather than participate as a minority growth investor, signals a different kind of backing than Onomondo's earlier venture rounds, one more typical of a private equity firm looking to accelerate a proven infrastructure business toward a larger global footprint rather than fund an earlier stage growth bet.

Against a backdrop of 2026 funding activity that has seen continued investment across European connectivity and connected infrastructure companies, Onomondo's raise stands out both for its size and for what it signals about investor appetite for the physical layer underpinning AI enabled devices. As more decision making moves onto devices themselves rather than staying in centralised cloud systems, the infrastructure connecting those devices to the rest of a company's operations is increasingly being treated as strategic in its own right, rather than as a commodity utility layered in as an afterthought.
