European Technology Group Acquires Lightning Reach, Adding UK Financial Support Platform to Its GovTech Portfolio
Editorial Team

European Technology Group has acquired Lightning Reach, a UK platform that connects financially vulnerable people to unclaimed benefits and grants, marking the buyer's third investment in its push to consolidate software businesses serving Europe's public sector.
The deal brings Lightning Reach's operations and existing team into ETG's GovTech portfolio without disruption to day to day activity. Chief Operating Officer Rhiannon Sheridan has stepped up to become Chief Executive Officer, while founder Ren Yi Hooi will remain involved as a director on the company's board.
A Platform Built to Untangle Fragmented Support Systems
Lightning Reach was set up during the Covid‑19 pandemic to bring together different support schemes into a single digital application journey. More than 20 million people in the UK currently live in financially vulnerable circumstances, and more than 24 billion pounds in benefits, grants and other assistance goes unclaimed every year, largely because the systems meant to deliver that support are too fragmented or complicated for people to navigate on their own.
Since launching in late 2021, the platform has reached more than 300,000 people and facilitated more than 25 million pounds in financial assistance. Lightning Reach works with more than 100 organizations across the UK, including utility providers, local authorities, charities, housing associations and banks, reducing the administrative burden on institutions while helping individuals find and apply for support spread across multiple, often disconnected schemes.
Leadership Handover Coincides With Acquisition
The transaction formalizes a leadership transition that had already been underway internally. Hooi described the sale as reaching a point where the company's impact could continue beyond its founding leadership, framing the move as a deliberate step to ensure the mission outlasts any single individual at the helm.
Sheridan, who joined the company's early team nearly five years ago, takes over as chief executive as Lightning Reach enters what she has described as its next chapter. She said the company's near‑term goal remains helping one million people access financial support by 2028, with ETG's backing intended to support that scale up while deepening existing partnerships and continuing platform investment.
Why ETG Sees Value in a Niche Social Fintech Platform
ETG has positioned itself as an entity working to become one of Europe's leading GovTech platforms, aiming to unify smaller, specialized software providers under a single long‑term ownership structure rather than pursuing quick exits. The group currently counts more than 400 public sector clients across six countries, serving a combined population of more than 14 million citizens.
For Lightning Reach, ETG's appeal lies largely in its experience navigating public sector technology and procurement, an area where councils, charities and service providers often face fragmented systems, tight budgets and heavy reporting requirements when distributing grants and other forms of support. Lightning Reach reported that it had quadrupled its annual recurring revenue over the past year while remaining cash positive, a performance record built on backing from nearly 30 earlier investors, including the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Big Issue Invest and Techstars.
Addressing a Structural Gap in Social Support Delivery
ETG's leadership framed the acquisition as a bet on a business tackling one of the more persistent challenges within the social safety net, ensuring that people entitled to help can actually access it. Beyond low awareness among potential applicants, the wider problem stems from a patchwork of support programs run by different organizations, each with its own rules and manual processes, making it harder for both individuals to claim assistance and institutions to deliver it efficiently.
That operating environment has created a growing market for platforms positioned between support providers and the people who need help, with Lightning Reach's single point of entry model designed to speed up how quickly applications move from submission to approval.
What Comes Next
With ETG's long‑term backing now in place, Lightning Reach's leadership has framed the acquisition as an opportunity to scale sustainably rather than chase rapid, disruptive growth. The company's stated ambition of reaching one million people by 2028 will require expanding beyond its current base of more than 100 partner organizations, a goal that ETG's public sector relationships and operational experience are intended to support as the platform moves into its next phase of growth.
